According to NBA insider Mark Stein, the Mavericks are considered unlikely to offer a maximum 4-year $77 million deal to the center. If the two sides cannot come to an agreement, Dallas is expected to search for a new suitor in the trade market, Stein reports.
The move comes from the last-season experience when Jalen Brunson left the club to join the New York Knicks, leaving Mavericks without any compensation.
Playing as a starter, Wood has blossomed into a right-hand man for Doncic, averaging 19.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks on 52.9% field goal and 40.6% three-point shooting.
Doncic recently spoke highly about Wood, noting an on-court connection between the two players.
"I am in a game a lot. Sometimes it's hard to be with me on the court probably. I just want to win. But he appreciates that, he never gets mad. He listens to me, I listen to him. It's working great," the Slovenian star said.
Asked whether he'd like to remain with the Mavericks, Wood expressed his interest on Christmas day.
"I'm happy to be here. That's what I’ll say. The vibe is good," the center told Tim MacMahon from ESPN. "I'm open to it."
