The player has informed the team he wants to move away ahead of the February 9th NBA trade deadline or go to a different team in free agency during the summer, Charania reports.
Three teams have emerged as possible suitors for Irving.
The Nets had offered Irving an extension that was not well-received by the player, Sharania writes.
The Nets guard has a 15% trade bonus in his contract. If he's traded before the February 9th deadline, he'd get a $2.1 million bonus which would have to be paid by the Nets if Irving doesn't void it.
Irving has been averaging 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists for the Nets this season.
With 31 wins and 20 losses, the team from Brooklyn is currently 4th in the NBA Eastern Conference standings.
Named an All-Star Game starter, Irving was in media turmoil earlier this season after he promoted an antisemitic movie on his Twitter account. After refusing to apologize, the star player was suspended indefinitely by the team.
The player eventually came back to the court after missing two weeks of action.
