Barkley then said that Jordan surrounded himself with familiar people, who were not going to be honest with MJ, and that could lead to bad management of the team. Such comments directed Jordan to an extreme reaction.
"That would be on his end, Matt," Barkley started and referred to one of the show's co-hosts. "He was my best friend at the time, and I love the guy and miss the guy, but I gotta do my job.
First of all, I do not think it's fair for me to critique other GMs and coaches and have a double standard. [For example] Skip Bayless, you can tell the guys he likes and dislikes. I think I am fair to everybody. What I said about Michael was – I do not know if he is ever going to be successful because of the people around him. I think he hires too many of his friends, and your friends don't ever tell you no.
He was struggling as a general manager, running the team, and I said, 'I don't know if he's ever going to be successful 'cause the people around him are never gonna tell him no.' Like, 'Do not draft that dude, we need to trade that dude and blah blah blah," Barkley explained.
His statements were not accepted well by Jordan.
"He went ballistic. And he called me, and that's the last thing I heard was 'motherf***er, f**k you! You supposed to be my boy.'
And I said, 'Man, I gotta do my job.' And we haven't spoken since that night, and that was probably close to ten years ago," Chuck revealed.
Despite the exchange, Barkley still thinks Michael Jordan is the best player that has ever played the game of basketball, ranking MJ first in his all-time Top 10 list.
