Ayton had a sour relationship with the Suns since last May, and it seemed that he would leave the team in free agency last summer. However, the Suns matched a 4-year $133 max offer from the Indiana Pacers, and the 24-year-old remained in Phoenix.
Before the Suns training camp in September, Ayton revealed that he did not talk with head coach Monty Williams for months.
Ayton was drafted with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Luka Doncic went 3rd in the same draft.
Ayton averages 18.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in 47 contests this season.
Recently, the Mavericks acquired Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets after trading him for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, an unprotected 2029 first-round pick, and two second-round picks in 2027 and 2029.
