Violence is one of the biggest scourges in the world of sport and is usually aimed at specific groups. Last Tuesday, Joventut Badalona's home-court, which will host the next Copa Del Rey the following week, became the scene of a new racist episode.

With less than four minutes left and Ratiopharm Ulm leading by three (72-69) against the hosts in the EuroCup Round 14 game, a woman fan sitting in the front row shouted 'Monkey!' aiming at Brazilian player Yago dos Santos.

The 23-year-old Ulm point guard, who came to Europe this season after winning the FIBA Intercontinental Cup with Flamengo in 2022, had his back turned to the screaming fan and probably didn't take notice of the racial slur. However, the laughter that aroused her insult encouraged her to repeat it more forcefully, using her hands as a loudspeaker.

The images leave no room for interpretation. TV cameras captured the moment and social networks have been filled with rejection comments. "How sad to see this. What a shame," said sports journalist Jose Manuel Puertas whose tweet has gone viral.

Yago dos Santos finished with 16 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds for Ulm that lost 76-82 and dropped to 8-6 in their EuroCup group, as Badalona improved to 9-5.

Although Joventut Badalona are yet to address the issue, several current and former players have already denounced the incident.

"I hope she's banned permanently," said Baxi Manresa player Dani Perez.

"I hope justice is done," wrote Tiago Splitter, a Brazilian former EuroLeague and NBA player who currently works as an assistant coach with the Brooklyn Nets.

"Impermissible, for how long will these things happen? I hope that Badalonado something out of respect, we can't keep quiet in such a situation,"Rafael Hettsheimeir, a former Brazilian international who played six seasons in the ACB argued.

Another player, Brandon Paul, was present at the incident and quick to condemn it on Twitter.

"Disgusting behavior. No doubt learned from what seems to be her parents. Perfect example of how misery loves company. I would never let them back into the stadium," the veteran guard who last year played with Badalona wrote.

Moreover, the Brazilian Basketball Federation also reacted, issuing an announcement.

"The CBB vehemently repudiates the expression of racism committed against the athlete Yago dos Santos, from Ratiopharm Ulm and the Brazilian National Team, during the match between the German team and Badalona, in Spain, for the EuroCup, this past Tuesday.

The act was recorded on video and identification is quick and easy. The CBB hopes that the Spanish authorities act with the rigor of the law and that crimes like this no longer go unpunished. Yago, we are with you, and we are sure that NOTHING will stop you.

Beforehand, the Brazilian Basketball Federation, through its president, Guy Peixoto Jr, will file to the EuroCup a request for investigation of the case so that those responsible for the crime are identified and punished in the sporting and civil sphere, in accordance with the laws of Spain, the release reads.
